Description:

NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN
(1869 - 1940) British Prime Minister best known for his foreign policy of appeasement, and in particular for his signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938. Good association T.L.S., 1p. 4to., London, May 23, 1931, to Chamberlain's ally and press baron MAX AITKEN, 1ST BARON BEAVERBROOK, enclosing a message for publication in Beaverbrook's 'Daily Express'. In part: '...I enclose you copy of the proposed statement for publication which I showed to you on Thursday. Please let me know, as soon as possible, that you confirm approval...the statement would not be published until after Taylor had received the Whip.' Signed in blue ink. Adhesive residue along the top and bottom edges, else very good. The proposed statement (included) reads: 'Following on the agreement recently arrived at between Lord Beaverbrook and Mr. Neville Chamberlain, then Chairman of the Conservative Party, Admiral Taylor, the Member for South Paddington, is now receiving the Conservative Whip in the House of Commons. It is, however, understood that this arrangement in no way prejudices or impairs the unfettered discretion of the Conservative and Unionist Association of South Paddington to choose its own candidate at the next General Election.' Beaverbrook was often denounced as excessively powerful, because his newspapers supposedly could (and often did) make or break his political rivals. He began supporting independent Conservative candidates and campaigned for fifteen years to remove Stanley Baldwin from the leadership of the Conservative Party. On March 17, 1931, Baldwin described media barons who owned British newspapers, most certainly attacking Beaverbrook, as having 'power without responsibility – the prerogative of the harlot throughout the ages.'
