NELSON A. MILES
(1839-1925) U.S. Army General who served in the Civil War for the Union, American Indian Wars, and the Spanish-American War. Miles was also the last Commanding General of the Army from 1895-1903 when the office was abolished. Good content war-date D.S., 2pp. 4to., 'Headquarters', April 4, 1862, ordering a division of troops to prepare for transportation to Fortress Monroe in Virginia. In part: '...Transportation being now ready to carry this division to Fortress Monroe according to instructions from Headquarters- Army of the Potomac April 2nd, 1862. Entire division will go on shipbound immediately...The brigades or any part of them on arriving at Fortress Monroe will be reported immediately to the General Commander.' Signed at the conclusion by Miles. Fine condition. This letter was written just before the Siege of Yorktown that which would commence the next day when the Army of the Potomac commanded by George McClellan attacked the city. The siege was an important part of the Peninsula Campaign in which McClellan attempted to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond. Fortress Monroe was a major Union landing zone for reinforcements throughout McClellan's campaign.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
