Description:

"NEGRO HISTORY BULLETIN"
Good group of seven bound compilations of the "Negro History Bulletin", each volume approx. 200pp. 8 1/2" x 11", consisting of the issues published 1938 to 1939, 1947 to 1949, 1949 to 1951, 1952 to 1953, 1953 to 1955, 1955 to 1957, and October 1957 to May 1959. The journal, still published today as "The Black History Bulletin", was founded in 1937 by Carter G. Woodson, one of the first scholars to study African-American history as its own discipline, and who in 1926 launched the celebration of "Negro History Week" which has since been expanded and is now celebrated as Black History Month. Woodson once stated that: "Race prejudice is merely the logical result of tradition, the inevitable outcome of thorough instruction to the effect that the Negro has never contributed anything to the progress of mankind." His tireless promotion of the study of black history aimed to counter this trend, and the continued publication and dissemination of this journal bolstered his efforts. Five volumes are marked as having once been the property of the Kansas City Public Library, and all bear some toning to the page edges and bumping to the corners, else very good.
