Description:

NAZI VICTORY PROPAGANDA BROADSIDE AND LEAFLET
An original broadside from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, 1p. 4to. (16 x 11 in.), [n.d.], printed in red ink and bearing a huge letter ‘V', with text beneath in German and Czech reading: ‘Germany Wins at All Fronts'. Together with a leaflet, 8 x 6 in., printed in blue and red ink in Czech, reading: ‘Knights Rise on all Fronts in Europe'. The German occupation of Czechoslovakia began in 1939 and continued through 1945. Hitler's long-held interest in Czechoslovakia was galvanized by the economic crisis of 1936, which left Germany scrambling for supplies and food to fulfill its ambitious ‘Four-Year Plan'. By 1939, Germany was desperate for foreign currency and particularly the gold of the Czech national bank, and, disregarding the agreements made in the Munich Agreement, invaded Bohemia and Moravia on March 15, 1939. The takedown was brutal: Czechs had to own documents proclaiming they were not Roma or Jewish; shops bore signs proclaiming they were Aryan; black-outs, rationing and forced labor were the norm, while huge Swastikas hung from buildings and German SS officers trolled the streets. After the Czechs painted the letter ‘V' for victory on buildings during a black-out as a show of resistance, the Nazis began to utilize the ‘V' symbol for themselves, displaying it in shop windows and other places. It is highly likely that our bold, graphic pieces were used for this purpose. Each near fine condition.
