Description:

NAZI JUDGE'S ROBE
A very rare full-length judge's robe from Nazi Germany. The black robe bears a satin collar with a silver wire national eagle insignia measuring 4 in. long sewn to the right breast. Within, the robe has the large gold embroidered initials of its one-time owner, ‘L.G.Z.' whom we have been unable to identify. It has four black closing buttons with one missing. Soiling soiling to the rear, esily cleaned, else fine condition. This robe was obtained by a Judge Advocate of the 89th Infantry Division Frank Gleason who toured Buchenwald concentration camp with Generals Patton and Eisenhower and, after hearing rumors of mass graves, ordered the local townspeople to uncover the bodies so they could be properly buried. He also served as a witness at the Nuremberg trials to attest to the authenticity of these events and the photos taken. Included with the robe is a provenance letter written by his grandson which reads in part: ‘…in 1945, after testifying during the Nuremberg trials, Major Gleason was given the Bronze Star, promoted to colonel for his service, and discharged. He returned home with three Nazi judge's robes. They were kept in storage at Colonel Gleason's home as a reminder of his service and the horrors perpetrated by the Nazi regime…' Also included are five books used by Gleason when he was in service and following his return to the United States. The include ‘Manual for Courts-Martial U.S. Army 1949', 1948, ‘Manual for Courts-Martial United States 1951', 1950, ‘Digest of Opinions of the Judge Advocate General of the Army 1912-1940', 1942, ‘A Manual for Courts-Martial U.S. Army 1928', 1927, and ‘The Officer's Guide', 1942. Fine. Perhaps one of the rarest Nazi 'uniforms' existing!
