Description:

NAZI "DEGENERATE ART" EXHIBITION CATALOG
Rare pamphlet Entartete Kunst ("Degenerate Art"), 32pp. 8vo., an important work of propaganda published in 1937 to coincide with the Third Reich's exhibition of "degenerate art" whose intent was to discredit the artists of modern art and the entire movement of non-classical works, primarily the work of Jews. The magazine, issued by Josef Goebbels propaganda ministry, is illustrated and edited in the typical demeaning manner of the Germans in this sorrowful period of history. The exhibition, which toured Munich and Berlin, was extremely popular and surprisingly well attended. Many of the foremost artists of the day were represented, including George Grosz, Otto Dix, Emil Nolde, Oskar Kokoschka and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and at the conclusion of the tour, 5,000 works of art were burned. Front cover is detached and a bit worn, balance is very good.
