Description:

NAVY SUBMARINE MANOMETER
War-date manufacture Bureau of the Navy Aneroid Manometer, 6 5/8" dia., brass construction, engraved on verso: U.S. NAVY BU. SHIPS 1943". These were used on Gato and Balao class submarines, and were capable of showing up to 37" of mercury in pressure. U.S. subs were slightly pressurized before diving to determine if there were faulty valves, shell holes, or open hatches before diving. Manometers were mounted in the control rooms of these vessels, in between the bow and stern diving "plane" wheels, and these"planesmen" were the only sailors allowed to cancel a dive. The manometers also did double duty as barometers. With a temperature correction chart.
