NATIVE AMERICAN REPRESENTATIVES TO THE CONFEDERATE CONGRESS ELIAS C. BOUDINOT AND SAMUEL B. CALLAHAN
A fine pair of signed items related to prominent Native Americans who served as non-voting representatives to the Confederate Congress, includes: ELIAS C. BOUDINOT (1835-1890) Cherokee politician, lawyer and newspaperman, served as delegate to the Confederate Congress for the Cherokee Nation. The nephew of Confederate general Stand Watie, he also served as a major in the Confederate Army, and was the first Native American attorney to practice before the Supreme Court. Rare partly-printed D.S. ‘E. C. Boudinot', 1p. 8.5 x 3.5 in., Fort Smith, AK, Aug. 30, 1890, a check drawn on the Merchants Bank of Fort Smith, paying fifty dollars to a C.S. Smart. Boudinot signs in black ink at bottom right, a month before his death. Shows two approx. 1 in. tears to the top edge, small areas of paper loss to the left-hand corners, numerous folds, and several other endorsements and overstamps, none affecting the signature. In very good condition overall. WITH: SAMUEL B. CALLAHAN (1833-1911) Delegate to the Second Confederate Congress representing the Creek and Seminole nations after first serving in the Confederate Army with the First Creek Mounted Volunteers. Rare signature in black ink on a 3.25 x 2 in. card, adding ‘Delegate from Creek & Seminole Nations C. S. Congress'. Shows faint mounting remnants and ink dates to the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition.
