Description:

(1742 - 1786) American Revolutionary General who served with distinction as Quartermaster General and later commanded the Southern Department, successfully thwarting British efforts to subdue the southern states. Rare A.N.S. "Nath. Greene" on the verso of an A.L.S. from a W. Carrington, a divisional quartermaster-general, 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.], March 25, 1783. Carrington requests that Greene authorize subsistence payments to his deputy quartermaster, a Capt. Parkie, and three other men under his command, as required by a Col. Dart. Carrington lists the men and the payments which they are to receive, and signs at the conclusion in black ink. Greene replies, in full: "Col. Dart will be pleased to issue the Subsistence money required in this letter, as the plan has been approved of in Genl Orders, & reported to Congress for their approbation." He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. Shows folds, with some ink show-though visible, else very good. The article has been matted in grey and framed so that both sides are visible, along with a color frontispiece engraving of Greene bearing his facsimile signature, the presentation 21 1/2" x 17 1/2" overall. A typed transcript is also present.
