NATHANIEL BANKS
(1816-1894) Governor of Massachusetts, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Union general during the Civil War. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Frederick, Dec. 23, 1861, to the Governor of New York Edwin Morgan (1811-1883), showing his support for increasing the number of enlisten men within a New York Regiment. In part: '...the 28th New York Regt. goes to New York today and desires to present to you a suggestion in relation to his Regiment...It is very desirable if it can be done that it should be filled up to its maximum number. The Regiment is in my judgement entirely worth this increase, and your approval indicated by an order for filling it up would greatly stimulate both officers and men and strengthen the effectiveness of the Regiment...' Fine condition. The 28th New York Infantry Regiment, active from May 22, 1861, to June 2, 1863, later fought in numerous historic conflicts, including the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Chancellorsville, among others.
