Description:

(1824 - 1868) Confederate brigadier general who served at First Bull Run, Second Bull Run, Antietam, and Kinston. Died shortly after the war from wounds related to a carriage accident. Great content, war date manuscript D.S., 4pp. 4to., Charleston, March 1, 1861, documenting the courts martial of three Confederate soldiers who are all being charged with insubordination and drunkenness. Two artillery privates, George Griffith and J.L. Hart are found guilty of their charges of 'Highly soldierlike conduct' and '[being] subversive of good order and military discipline' respectively. Both received sentences of 'Solitary confinement in cell on bread and water.' The third, Sgt. Michael Bligh, who in part: '...was so intoxicated while Sergeant of the Guard as to be unable to perform his duty...between the hours of 12 pm and 1 o'clock am at Fort Moultrie...', was found not guilty. Evans signs the conclusion as the commanding general present. Glue remnants on second page affecting some text, edges a bit ragged, still very good. A good amount of irony is present here as Evans himself was notorious for abrasive behavior and drunkenness. It was reported in a few battles he was present at that an aid would follow him everywhere with a barrel of his favorite whiskey. Evans was subject to two court martials over the course of the war on charges similar to those indicated in this document. He would eventually be relieved from command before war's conclusion due to complaints against him and he spent the final years of the war in administrative duties.
