FRANCOIS JOSEPHE LEFEBVRE (1755-1820) Duc de Dantzig, French military commander during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and one of the original eighteen Marshals of the Empire created by Napoleon. Fine association manuscript L.S. ‘Lefebvre' 1p. legal folio, Paris, Feb. 29, 1802, to LOUIS-ALEXANDRE BERTHIER, Minister of War at that time. In part: ‘…I believe, Citizen Minister, that you have learned…that the Auxiliary Battalion is to go to Paris. I know today by notice of [the commune of] Gueret…'. Berthier (1753-1815) was a Marshal of France who served under Lafayette in the American Revolution and with Napoleon in Italy and Egypt. Appointed Minister of War from 1800-1807. At the time of this letter, he was organizing the French army to stabilize France, also taking control of the Army of the Reserve and moving it across the Alps in 1800. With it, Napoleon fought and won the Battle of Marengo (during which Berthier was wounded), regaining northern Italy for France. With integral address leaf, near fine.
