HENRI GREGOIRE (1750-1831) French clergy, the Bishop of Blois and a Revolutionary. Gregoire was a member of the national Convention which opposed Napoleon's coup and suggested that he be deposed. A.L.S. ‘Gregoire Eveque' 4pp. 4to., Paris, Nov. 17, 1803 to Monsieur Engelstorf. Gregoire writes to his ‘Friendly and wise friend', in part: ‘…Permit me as a man who writes to you from the heart a letter [regarding] our compatriot Lehman who would like to express to you an expression of attachment…In our work on the love of our country, a Dane has kindly agreed to give me a viva voce analysis [about] a subject interesting to us all…but it is impossible to read it in the original…'. Gregoire goes on to ask his friend for help, with much more content. Worthy of full translation. Tape repair to right margin on final page, clear of signature, otherwise very good.
