Description:

(NAPOLEONIC WARS)
AUGUSTE DE MARMONT (1774-1852) French general and nobleman who rose to the rank of Marshal of France and was awarded the title Duke of Ragusa. He commanded a corps at Ulm, corps, then took possession of Dalmatia and occupied the Republic of Ragusa. Fought at Wagram, and was later defeated by Wellington in Spain. In April 1813 Napoleon gave him the command of a corps, which he led at the battles of Lützen, Bautzen and Dresden. He then fought throughout the great defensive campaign of 1814 until the last battle before Paris. Two pieces: Manuscript D.S. ‘seen by us, the General in Chief of the Imperial Army and Duke of Ragusa', 2pp. legal folio, Salamanca, Mar. 21, 1812, his endorsement on the last page of a list of citations for seven officers penned in the hand of JEAN-PIERRE BECHAUD (1770-1814) French officer in the Legion of Honor and commander in Spain, killed in action at the Battle of Orthez, February 1814. Bechaud's citations include combat details such as ‘Vivarel…wounded three times while leading his battalion, received a bullet in the thigh…Cesson…surgeon…who displayed the greatest zeal in the treatment of the sick and wounded…whom he bandaged on the battlefield…Portier…killed many of the enemy's men and horses…', and more. A few rust spots at top left corner affect nothing, overall near fine. WITH: an A.L.S. ‘le Duc de Ragusa' 3pp. 4to., [n.p., Aug. 3, n.y.], to the German mathematician and physicist ANDREAS FREIHERR VON ETTINGHAUSEN (1896-1978) a pioneer in the principles of electromagnetic energy. Marmont wishes to be remembered to the scholarly community in Vienna, and thanks Ettinghausen for having obtained scientific instruments for him with which he has made hygrometric observations in Venice: ‘…concerning the size of the column of mercury…when the thermometer boils, the mercury always drops for about two hours…subsequently it stays at a constant height…the different levels disappear…It therefore seems that the dilution of the tube increases the size of the column of the mercury and thus diminished elevation…'. Fine condition, two pieces.
