NAPOLEON II, SON OF NAPOLEON BONAPARTE OWNED FORMAL TABLEWARE (2)
NAPOLEON II (1811-1832) The son of Emperor Napoleon I and Marie Louise of Austria, he had been Prince Imperial of France and King of Rome since birth. Disputed Emperor of the French for a few weeks in 1815. After the fall of his father, he lived the rest of his life in Vienna. Died of tuberculosis at the age of 21. Pair of very rare pieces of formal vermeil tableware once owned and used by Napoleon II, includes a spoon and four-tined fork, each 7.25 in. long. Each is decorated with an ornate motif of laurel leaves, flower-filled urns, and a Caduceus, a classic symbol of commerce and negotiation which was also used by his father. The reverse of each piece is engraved 'F N' for 'Francois Napoleon'. The pieces were made by goldsmiths Leonard Chatenet (1819-1830) and Antoine Vital Cardeilhac (1804-1851) and are so hallmarked. Any personal objects belonging to Napoleon II are excessively rare. From the personal collection of one of the world's largest private collections devoted to the French Revolution and Napoleon I, as well as the First and Second World Wars.
