Description:

(1769 - 1821) The "Little Corporal" whose brilliance in the field of battle and as Emperor of France has made him perhaps the most important figure of post-Renaissance Europe. Fine content manuscript L.S. "Nap", 2pp. 4to., Saint Cloud, May 7, 1811 to Jean-Girard Lacuee, count of Cessac, French general and politician, and Minister for War under Napoleon. With the birth of Napoleon II two months earlier and the French Empire at (relative) peace, the emperor concentrates on domestic affairs. He writes, in part: "...I wrote you that my intention was that you should provide ther working people of Paris with a lot to do and that you put to work the shoemakers, harness-makers, tailors, hat-makers, and as many of these sorts as you can employ...Today I wish that you double all your orders for June and July so that in the moments preceding the festivities, when a large number of foreigners will be arriving, there are no signs of any kind of discontent not poverty...should you find yourself considering having beds and other furniture made...that could employ the workers of the Faubourg St. Antoine...immediately order a large number of them...I suppose you are having some shipped to the post in Sampigny. Go ahead and order the 100 boxes and request that they be delivered before June 10, so that we are sure that the necessary number of workers are employed..." A few scattered light foxed spots, else very good. The "festivities" were likely in celebration of France's military victories...soon to be forgotten in the rout following the abortive assault on Moscow the following year.
