Description:

(NAPOLEON BONAPARTE)
SIR JOHN STRACHAN (d. 1777), 5th Baronet Strachen [?], a fine content A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Cliffden, July 29, 1815, to Royal Navy Lt. George Francis Bridges in Plymouth. Strachan describes seeing Napoleon aboard HMS Bellerophon, and offers his opinion about what should be done with the deposed dictator. In part: "...He made his appearance, at the Window which was open when I had a most excellent view of him, and now feel completely gratified in having seen one of the most extraordinary men...I should be sorry to hear of his career terminating on the Scaffold, however, the security of Europe is not to be trifled with, & we must at least find a secure retreat for him...I am not for sending him...to St. Helena...small craft have been known to escape from thence to South America & with such Talents as Buonaparte possesses such an escape might not be impossible...". Seal tear affects three words in text, a few light stains, else very good. Despite Strachen's fears, Napoleon would arrive on St. Helena three months later, and would remain there powerless until his death in 1821.
