Description:

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
(1769 - 1821) The "Little Corporal" whose brilliance in the field of battle and as Emperor of France has made him perhaps the most important figure of post-Renaissance Europe. Most important manuscript L.S. "Bonaparte", on his First Consul" letterhead, 1p. sm. 4to., Milan, June 20, 1800, to Ferdinand, the Duke of Parma and the last Bourbon to possess the title. Six days after the French victory over the Austrians at Marengo, a confident Napoleon presses the Duke to submit to French occupation of the duchy. In large part: "...I have received your letter which your Highness has written to me. I need not deny to him that the French army complains about the favors given to the insurgents of Fontana Buona particularly through the efforts of the archduchess [the duke''s wife, daughter of Maria Theresa] and without the good opinion that I have particularly of your Highness, and the consideration and the respect which the French people have for the King of Spain, I would have treated the state of your Highness as an enemy. I beg you to count entirely on the protection of the French people and to be convinced of the desire that I have for its growth and to improve the prospects of his state if the circumstances permit...". Boldy signed at conclusion. Folds, tiny marginal tape repair, else very good. With transmittal envelope addressed: "To His Highness the Duke of Parma In Parma" with Napoleon''s complete red wax seal on verso. Napoleon''s victory over the Austrians at Marengo sealed his place in the French military hierarchy, and led to the de facto division of the properties and assets of the duchy.
