Description:

Early-war M1 helmet, fitted with fixed chin strap bales securing a strap with a "raised bar"-style brass buckle, and with the seam at the front. The exterior of the shell is sand-finished in olive drab, with the name "Holmes" stenciled at front in period black paint. The interior front skirt is heat-stamped "754A". The helmet is fitted with an early, scarce fiber liner bearing the maker's mark of Mine Safety Appliances, Inc. inside the dome. The early date of this liner is further demonstrated by the unpainted, "A"-shaped washers securing the suspension system. The name "Holmes" is again stenciled on the front of the liner in black ink. The liner's leather chin strap shows some cracking, with additional appropriate wear to the interior of the liner and some wear and abrasions to the exterior of the liner and shell, else very good. Records provided with this helmet by the consignor suggest that it belonged to U.S. Naval Reserve medical corpsman Hilary H. Holmes, who appears on the January 1, 1943 Naval Reserve Register at the rank of ensign, on the July 1, 1944 register at the rank of lieutenant, junior grade, and on the April 1, 1951 register at the rank of lieutenant.
