Description:

Fine example of a U.S. Marine Corps officer's M1911 campaign hat, of the type worn widely by troops of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. It is constructed of khaki felt with a "Montana"-style peak fitted with four vents. The crown is encircled by a silk ribbon band beneath an officer's gold and black campaign cord. The interior is fitted with a taupe cord chinstrap, as well as a brown leather sweat band stamped on the inside with the name of manufacturer Sigmund Elsner with the contract date "June 24, 1916". A paper label giving the size "7 1/8" is also applied beneath the sweat band. The exterior of the sweatband is inscribed with the surname "Lyman" in black ink. The underside of the brim further bears the black ink inscription: "E.J. Lyman [illegible] C.S.G. Mar. 1917 to Nov. 1 1918 1st Lt. M. C. U.S.A. Nov. 1 1918 to [blank]". A second black ink inscription reads: "Camp Johnston Fla. Nov. 4 1918 to [blank]". The size stamp "L" also appears on the underside of the brim. Shows minor soiling overall, with additional soiling and wear to the sweatband, and with one or two minute moth nips to the crown, else very good.
