Description:

N.S.D.A.P. BANNER USED AT THE 1938/39 NUREMBERG RALLY
An excessively rare relic with tremendous provenance, an original hanging banner from either the 1938 or 1939 Nuremberg Rally. The double-sided banner, 50.5 x 93 in., two-piece cotton construction, bears a black swastika on a white disc, then stitched to a red field. The top edge has been folded over and sewn to form a hoist. One bottom corner bears some slight loss, while the other bears small pin holes, indicative of the bottom edge being secured as well. Some small holes, tiny spots of staining, else very good. This historic flag was first gifted to our consigner by his father Major William W. Thompson III, who served in Germany immediately after war's end, who in turn received it in 1949 from their German maid, 'Tilly'. As indicated on our consigner's notarized letter of provenance, Tilly's brother (whose full name is regrettably unknown to us) served as an SS captain during World War II and led one of the crews charged with setting up and dismantling the rally grounds. According to our consigner, Tilly herself was told little else about the flag, as her brother '...was sent to war shortly thereafter...'. This suggests to us that it stems from either the 1938 Reichsparteitag - the final Nuremberg Rally ever held - or the planned 1939 'Rally for Peace' - ironically cancelled just two days before Germany invaded Poland. A truly impressive banner, sold with our consigner's letter of provenance. Image of Hitler speaking at the 1938 Reichsparteitag is purely for reference, and not included.
