Description:

"MYSTERY SHIP SHANGRI-LA" WAR STAMPS POSTER
Scarce original American World War II poster, 20" x 26 1/2", a three-color depiction of twin-engine bombers taking off from the deck of an aircraft carrier, beside the promise: ''Bomb Tokyo With Your Extra Change". The top of the poster bears the exclamation: "$1.00 in War Stamps From Every American Will Build the Mystery Ship Shangri-La", with the exhortation: "Buy War Stamps. Fill Your Stamp Album Now". The bottom edge is marked "U.S. Government Printing Office : 1943 - O - 531075" and "W88 817-A". Shows heavy mailing folds with some splitting thereto and a large clean tear from the top edge, all repaired on the verso with archival tape, else very good. The imagery and text of this poster refer to the April 1942 Doolittle Raid against Tokyo, in which sixteen B-25 bombers were launched from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. HORNET. When asked by reporters where the raid had been launched from, he answered that they had come from "Shangri-La", a fictional Himalayan kingdom from the novel "Lost Horizon". In 1944, the ESSEX-class carrier U.S.S. SHANGRI-LA would be commissioned into the U.S. Navy.
