In part: "...I was starting out the other day to hunt up some deserters from the infantry...The General will be married the 10th of March & will start for Europe...I cannot go with him...I am to be his first groomsman and will leave here for N.Y. next month...It will cost me considerable money but I could not refuse...I have had a splendid new set of decorations sent me from Paris...We have just received 10 gals. of fine Scotch Whiskey - Kelly is making us a brew...I have [killed] two antelope for my troops...[I] shall give them a toast of the Scotch brew, much to the satisfaction of the Irish in it...".
