Description:

MUTINOUS PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRYMEN ASSAULT THEIR OFFICERS
Most surprising unsigned manuscript document, 1p. 4to. [Lexington, North Carolina, n.d.], a rough draft of an official statement in the hand of Lieutenant Isaac D. Landis of the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, in full: "We the undersigned Officers of the 9th Pa. Vol. Cavalry respectfully make the following statement to wit: The 9th Regt. Pa. Vol. Cavalry was mustered out of the service at Lexington, N.C. on the 18th day of July 1865; on the day following several members of Co. 'M' became intoxicated and for some supposed wrong threatened to take the life of their Captain (Shelp), and became very unruly when their captain attempted to quiet them ordering them to their Quarters, whereupon they attacked him. Lt. Col. [David H.] Kimmel then in command of the Regt. seeing this, came to the relief of Capt. Shelp and ordered the men to their quarters. They were about to obey when one Gregory, more vicious than the rest, attacked the Colonel upon which he seized a club of wood and struck the man a stunning blow, felling him to the ground insensible. After some time when all appeared quiet a plot was discovered to take the life of the Colonel and men were arming themselves for that purpose being open in their threats against his life, whereupon he had their ringleaders arrested and imprisoned at Lexington N.C. We take pleasure in endorsing the action of Lt. Col. Kimmel in this affair, as he done his duty as commanding officer of the Regiment without fear or hesitation." This statement shows many ink emendations and corrections, while the verso bears a list of pay rates for various ranks of the regiment. The outcome of this series of assaults and conspiracies is unknown; the common punishments for such infractions during the Civil War were usually a very long term of imprisonment or death. Shows folds, with chips to the edges, else very good.
