Description:

(1881 - 1938) Turkish army officer, revolutionary, and founder of the Republic of Turkey, serving as its first President from 1923 until his death in 1938. Ideologically a secularist and nationalist, his policies and theories became known as Kemalism. As president, Ataturk initiated a rigorous program of political, economic, and cultural reforms with the ultimate aim of building a modern, progressive, and secular nation-state. AN OVERSIZE SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH AS PRESIDENT AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS POWER Very rare S.P. "K. Ataturk", 11" x 14 1/2" b/w, a chest-up profile photo illustration of Ataturk in formal wear, showing the blind-embossed mark of an Istanbul studio at bottom right. He signs boldly ink black ink at lower left, adding the date "2/X/1936" below. Shows negligible chips and folds to the margins which would all easily mat-out, a small retouched abrasion to Ataturk's head, else very good. At this point in his career, Ataturk was at the height of his power: the Montreux Convention was signed, giving Turkey control over the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits and regulating the transit of naval warships. The Convention gives Turkey full control over the Turkish Straits and guarantees the free passage of civilian vessels in peacetime. It restricts the passage of naval ships not belonging to Black Sea states. He also negotiated the Balkan Pact, a mutual defense pact among Balkan nations, mainly aimed at controlling Mussolini, and he met with King Edward VIII in Istanbul.
