(1881 - 1938) Turkish army officer, revolutionary, and founder of the Republic of Turkey, serving as its first President from 1923 until his death in 1938. Ideologically a secularist and nationalist, his policies and theories became known as Kemalism. As president, Ataturk initiated a rigorous program of political, economic, and cultural reforms with the ultimate aim of building a modern, progressive, and secular nation-state. Very rare printed D.S. "Gazi M. Kemal" in Turkish, 2pp. folio, Ankara, [n.d., circa April 30, 1933], a certificate congratulating OSCAR R. BENAVIDES (1876-1945) for being appointed to his second term of office as President of Peru. Ataturk signs at the conclusion in black ink, utilizing the title "Gazi" to denote a champion of the Turkish people. His blind-embossed seal is affixed just below and to the left of the signature, with another official signing at bottom right. The certificate is affixed to a folio album page, shows a horizontal fold at center and scattered foxing, else very good.
