Description:

Incredibly rare anti-Semitic leaflet from the Munich district of the NSDAP, 6.25 x 11.5 in., certainly responding to the assassination of EDUARD VOM RATH (1909-1938) - the pretext for Kristallnacht, the anti-Jewish pogrom called 'The Night of Broken Glass'. The top portion bears a printed message by Reichsminister Joseph Goebbels, encouraging an end of the looting: 'The justified and understandable outrage of the German people over the cowardly Jewish assassination of a German diplomat in Paris gave me a lot of air last night...In numerous cities...retaliatory actions were taken against Jewish buildings and businesses...the entire population is now being urged to refrain from any further demonstrations and actions against Judaism...the final answer to the Jewish assassination will be given by way of legislation...' Beneath this is an added inflammatory message from Gauleiter Adolf Wagner, reading: 'Here in Munich...World Jewry has received the answer it deserves! The synagogue burned down! The Jewish shops are closed! The insolent Jews are arrested! The National Socialist Munich fights world Jewry and its black and red allies for freedom and security of the nation and of all Germans...' One fold, else fine condition. Of course, despite his message here, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels soon ordered after the assassination that 'demonstrations should not be organized by the party, but as they erupt spontaneously, they are not to be hampered.' Over 1,400 synagogues and prayer rooms, more than 7,000 Jewish shops and 29 department stores were damaged or destroyed, and more than 30,000 Jewish men were sent to concentration camps.
