Description:

MUHAMMAD ALI "LET MY PEOPLE GO" SIGNED SILK SCREEN ARTIST''S PROOF PRINT
Rare Muhammad Ali signed limited edition World Federation of United Nations Associations original first day issue silk screen print, 10" x 14" on heavy beige stock, boldly signed "Muhammad Ali" in pencil at bottom. This is one of but ten artists'' proofs created for this issue. A series of 250 numbered prints were issued, but these were "defaced" by the addition of of a U.N. postage stamp and cancellation. The image shows an African man in chains standing above a pile of gold, with Ali''s facsimile signature at left. At bottom appears Ali''s title of the work: "LET MY PEOPLE GO", above his large pencil signature. Mint condition. The United Nations refused to print this edition in its original state, which included a white South African man holding the African''s chains as he whips him and exclaims: "I am the white man". That image, which caused a political upror in some quarters, was effectively "erased" in the printing process. Very fine condition. From the Collection of Rodney Hilton Brown, formerly President of Hilton Fine Arts, Ltd., the Publisher of Muhammad Ali''s limited edition silkscreen prints in 1978. With a copy of the WFUNA press release picturing the work, and a copy of Mr. Brown, Ali, Kurt Waldheim, LeRoy Neiman and another U.N. official at a ceremony presenting Ali''s artworks.
