MOURNING THE LOSS OF GEORGE WASHINGTON
Rare manuscript D.S. 1p. 4to., Pittsburg, Jan. 9, 1800, to Abner Evans & Benjamin Chapman, in part: "...For their Services carrying letters of Invitation from Col. Hamtramck to the Milita Officers & several Citizens of Washington Westmoreland and Fayette counties - to attend the procession in honor of the memory of the late General Washington at Pittsburg - from 4-7 Janry. 1800...Evans three days at 133-1/3 cents per day incld expences 4.00 Chapman four days at 133 1/3 cents 5.44...Received of John Wilkins Junior QrMrGen by Isaac Craig Depy QM Gen each the sum...". The news of Washington's death on Dec. 12, 1799 rocked the world, even spurring Napoleon to decree a ten-day period of mourning. One ink blot, tape repairs to verso, very good.
