Description:

MOTHER OF A MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIER SEEKS NEWS OF HER SON
War-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Marblehead, Nov. 18, 1861, from a James Gregory to Rev. A.H. Quint, chaplain of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers, inquiring after the health of his son in the army. In part: "At the request of my wife - the fond & anxious mother of one only child - Robert B. Brown, I venture to trouble you with an inquiry respecting said son, who is a second Lieutenant of Company C, commanded by Capt. Cogswell of your Regiment. She received a letter from him dated shortly after the disaster at Edward''s Ferry, detailing the hardship to which the Regiment had been exposed during its long, wet, & rainy march in consequence of that affair, but has not received a word from him since..." This clash occurred on October 20, 1861, at the same time as the more notable Union defeat at Ball''s Bluff. It resulted in minimal losses on either side. The letter shows original mailing folds, else very good to fine.
