Description:

MOST NOTORIOUS LYNCHING IN THE UNITED STATES
On August 7, 1930, a mob of ten to fifteen thousand whites abducted three young black men from the jail in Marion, Indiana, lynching Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith. Sixteen-year-old James Cameron narrowly survived after being beaten by the mob. Lawrence Beitler's photograph of the two victims' hanging bodies is regarded as one of the most iconic images of an American lynching.
The night before the lynching, Claude Deeter, a 23-year-old white man, was shot and taken to the hospital, where he died the next day. His fiancée, nineteen-year-old Mary Ball, reported that the men who shot Deeter had raped her. Police arrested Shipp, Smith, and Cameron, charging them with murdering Deeter and raping Ball. Ball later recanted her claim. Offered here is a rare period 3.5 x 5.5 in. b/w glossy print of Beitler's famous photograph of the scene showing Shipp and Smith hanged, a massive crowd about them. James Cameron, who cames as close to being murdered as having had a noose placed around his neck, wrote a book about the event in 1982: 'A Time of Terror' (Milwaukee: T/D Publications), 1982. 228pp. 8vo. in paper, the same image of the lynching appearing on the cover. Two pieces.
