Description:

MOSES PORTER(1755 - 1822) American military officer, served in the Revolution, fighting at Bunker Hill and under Anthony Wayne, later a brevet brigadier general in the War of 1812. Fine association A.L.S., 1p. 4to., "Head Quarters New York", Dec. 10. 1815 to naval hero Oliver Hazard Perry. In part: "...No official information has reached me that the Detachment of Artillery that has recently served in the Mediterranean...is destined for the Southward [?] - I shall immediately address the Secretary of War on the subject, and a soon as I receive instructions I shall be happy to communicate to you the result...". On the verso appears a docket by OLIVER HAZARD PERRY (1785-1819) American naval officer who led American forces in the victory at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, who writes: "New York Dec. 10, 1815 General M. Porter Has received no official information respecting detachment of artillery ordered to the Mediterranean". Fine .
