Description:

MOSBY'S RAID NEAR CATLETT'S STATION
Fine content letter by Pvt. Alonzo A. Rice, Co. A, 16th Vermont Inf'y, 4pp. 8vo., Manassas Junction, June 1, 1863 describing guerilla John B. Mosby's famous attack on a train near Catlett's Station, Va. two days earlier. In part: "...I will relate a little affair that happened here...There is a patrol of six men and a Corporal that passes over the road twice during the night...about nine AM the train passed us for Catlett's, then within 2 1/2 miles of Catlett's - it ran off the track and was fired into by a small Howitzer. There is a guard of about forty men...that generally accompany the train...It seems that Mosby came in after the patrol had passed, loosened a rail, and placing a wire around it, and near the woods stood a man dressed in citizen's clothes...he pulled the train one side, running the Engine off. They had the gun already placed to fire into it...the Lieut. of the guard told them to take care of themselves and then skedaddled. The Rebs set fire to the train...the Vt. Cavalry were there to meet them. They routed them instantly, killing four and taking twenty prisoners, also the gun...". First page a bit light due to a poor pen, later pages darker, and all text is completely legible.
