Description:

MOSBY'S MEN SHADOW THE FEDERALS BEFORE GETTYSBURG
War-date Union soldier's letter by David F. Ferris, 44th N. Y. Vols., [KIA at Gravelly Run, Va., 3/31/65], 6pp. octavo, in pencil, "Bivouack, Aldie, Virginia", June 20, 1863. In part: "..Manassas Junction is a place of considerable interest. It was within the fortifications & earthworks of this place that the Rebel army sheltered itself for a long time before the first Bull Run fight....yesterday afternoon we marched to Aldie, where we now are...Day before yesterday, a severe cavalry & light artillery fight commenced here. The Federals whipped the Rebels & drove them 7 miles through the Bull Run mountains. Yesterday another fight took place at Middlebury and our force again whipped the enemy & drove him out of the Town. It is said that the enemy has been reinforced & are now twenty thousand strong. Back where we were on picket, two officers, a major & capt. of Hookers staff were taken prisoners the night before, by Mosbys men...I have been thinking some about applying for a commission in a negro Regt. What do you think of such a plan. I have found marching pretty hard work since I was sick, but I am becoming hardened every day & think I shall be able to follow the Rebels in Penn. if necessary...June 23. I am sound & well as ever. Again I have been in battle & have again been preserved from the shot & shell of the enemy for which I have reason to thank Providence. The battle extended out over the ground from Middleburg to Ashby's Gap...." Very good.
