MOSBY MONROE PARSONS
(1822-1865) Confederate major general, commander of infantry in the Trans-Mississippi Theater, murdered in Mexico by guerrilla fighters after fleeing the country to avoid prosecution. Fine group of three items related to Parsons, includes: Rare, bold signature ‘M M Parsons' in black ink on a 3.25 x 1.25 in. slip of paper, tabbed to the upper left of a letter by his father, Gustavus Adolphus Parsons, Carson City, MO Feb. 10, 1880, to a Belmont Perry, who has written to Parsons' mother requesting a signature. The elder Parsons replies, in part: ‘...Mrs. M. M. Parsons died some years before the late war, and I received the letter… Mrs. M. M. Parsons having been dead so long it would be now impossible to obtain an autograph letter. I however send you his signature which I have clipped from some old paper that was filed in some sent in this County you may rest assured that it is his signature and genuine.' The letter shows original mailing folds, with tape residue at the left edge and small mounting remnants to the verso, else very good. WITH: A carte de visite photograph (unsigned), 2.5 x 4 in. sepia, a chest-up view of Parsons, with an ink identifying inscription on the verso partially obscured by mounting remnants. The image is somewhat light or faded, else very good. WITH: A manuscript biography and service history of Parsons, 5pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], drafted by an unknown hand, bound at the left edge, in fine condition. Three pieces.
