MORGAN CHRYSLER
(1822 - 1890) Union brevet major general who saw action at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, and Chancellorsville. One of only four men who rose from private to general during the war. War-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Louisiana, March 1, 1864, letter to an unknown captain requesting more tents for his men. In part: '...Nearly all of the tents are entirely worthless a great many of the were so at the time they were issued to my command...the effort has been made to procure tents of any descriptions to properly shelter the men...no shelter tents can be procured as an order issued during the Red River Campaign prevents discovering any other...' An endorsement on the verso is signed by GEORGE MCGINNIS (1826-1910) Union brigadier general who saw action at Shiloh and Vicksburg. Fine condition. The Red River Campaign mentioned was a series of battles fought along the Red River in Louisiana from March-May 1864 in which the Union army attempted to surround main Confederate armies and capture Mobile Alabama, but were unsuccessful in their efforts.
