Description:

715. BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY Ironic war-date A.L.S. "B. L. Montgomery" on "Partito Nazinoale Facista" [National Fascist Party] Reggio Calabria letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., "Italy" [undoubtedly near Foggia], Sep. 29, 1943, to Casy. The letter is clearly an example of Monty's dry wit, he writes: "...I shall be delighted to see you...I suggest you bring Freyberg with you. Fly to BARI; or by that time FOGGIA [whose airfields Montgomery had captured only days earlier] will probably be the best airfield...You may like to have the enclosed pamphlet. It contains the methods I use when making war against the Germans...". Light toning, two clean marginal tears, else very good. Montgomery likely refers to Lieutenant-General Bernard Cyril Freyberg who commanded the New Zealand Army Expeditionary Force in the Battle of Crete, the North African Campaign, and later in the Battle of Monte Cassino.  $1,000 - 1,500
