Description:

MONTE CASSINO MAP, PHOTO AND DOCUMENT GROUPING FROM A POLISH OFFICER
Outstanding, large lot of material largely associated with a Polish officer's service at the epic battle of Monte Cassino where the Poles were crucial in taking the occupied abbey. The lot, which originated from "Zolzistaw Brunne Polish Forces CMF 503", apparently attached to the 12th Polish Survey Co., includes approx. 225 photographs, most 2 1/2" x 3 1/2", documenting his military service which included deployment in Iraq, Uzbekistan, Albania, Tobruk, and Italy, specifically Monte Cassino, Rome, the Piedmont region, and points north. Images include generals Alexander and Anders, other officers, about twenty images of the shattered ruins of Monte Cassino and the surrounding towns, awards ceremonies, review of troops, local peoples and scenes, etc. Also included is a great deal of material in Polish, none translated, including: a May, 1940 printed collection of surveyor's perspectives with altitudes of various approaches to Monte Cassino, prepared by the 12th Polish Survey Co., 42pp. 15" x 8 1/4", along with with an additional 17pp. duplicate, unbound pages; a Sep. 17, 1944 letter sent by Benne to a family member; three poems, one of which concerns Cassino; two or three typed orders; three autograph manuscripts and one typed manuscript, 13pp. total; British 8th Army newspaper reporting on capture of Cassino; a regimental history, nine other contemporary or early postwar newspapers and clippings concerning the Poles and Cassino; and book "Bitwa o Monte Cassino" by Melchior Wankowicz, published in Poland, 1945, photos and mention of hundreds of Poles who fought at Cassino. Overall very good, and certainly worthy of research!
