Description:

Scarce Model 1863 Maynard carbine, .50 caliber, 20 inch barrel, serial no. 7023. The breech-loading Maynard carbine used a brass cartridge and was patented in 1851. During the Civil War, the U.S. Ordnance Department contracted over 20,000 of the 2nd Model Maynards, and issued them to Federal cavalry. They were considered by North and South to be one of the best performing and most accurate of all the cavalry arms used during the war. This example, likely issued early 1863, measures 36.25 in. long overall. The walnut stock is badly cracked on the right side, and one of the screws on the tang behind the trigger is lost. There are dings and dents as so often seen in battle used weapons. The rifle is fitted with a sling bar and saddle ring on the left side of the breech frame and has the folding two-leaf rear sight. The stock has a slightly curved iron butt plate. The round barrel has a partial octagonal breech stamped 'G.W.S' on left flat area and exhibits an even brown patina. The lever and mechanism are tight and operate very well. Stampings on the right side of the frame are still clear and read: 'MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS' with the left side reading: 'EDWARD MAYNARD . / PATENTEE . / MAY 27 . 1851. / DEC . 6 . 1859'
