Description:

MODEL 1840 NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER''S SWORD
Civil War-era American Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officer''s Sword, 32" blade, 38" overall. The reverse ricasso bears the mark of the manufacturer "Emerson & Silver Trenton N.J.", while the obverse is marked "U.S. DFM" with the date "1863". The grip is cast brass, imitating the more expensive wire-wrapped leather style, with a D-shaped hand guard and a "double clamshell" cross guard. The hand guard is also stamped "DFM". The sword is housed in a black-painted steel scabbard with brass throat and tip guards, the latter somewhat dented and deformed. The blade shows some surface oxidation throughout, else very good. The Model 1840 had a lifespan of more than seventy years, seeing frontline service in conflicts from the Mexican war to the Spanish-American War.
