Description:

437. MARGARET MITCHELL (1900-1949) American author, a Pulitzer Prize winner for her epic novel Gone With the Wind. Good content (if ironic) T.L.S. "Margaret Mitchell Marsh" on her personal letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Atlanta, Oct. 25, 1937 to noted writer of the newspaper column "The Lyon's Den", Leonard Lyons. In part: "...In your column...you say that I have 'rejected two offers this month to follow Mrs. Roosevelt into the ranks of daily columnists'. I haven't had even one offer of this kind...You also say that I am still driving my '1932 car.' The automobile you have in mind was a 1929 model, and I regret to say that I am not still driving it. Senility finally claimed it and it had to be replaced...You also credit me with 'confiding' that the first royalties from my novel were used in 'paying damage claims arising from my traffic accidents.' I have never in my life paid...even one damage claim...the third [statement] is a definitely damaging statement that I cannot afford to ignore. It pictures me as a careless and reckless driver with a long history of accidents for which I was to blame...I never like to write a letter of this kind...but I have been on the point of writing you several times in the past because of other misstatements...isn't there some arrangement we could make that would enable you to get the correct information...I have never known one of you [columnists] personally...I am not inaccessible. I am not unapproachable... [I am] a former member of your own profession who happened to be unbelievably lucky with her first novel..." Moderate glue stains show through from verso, especially at top of first page, some paper loss on first page where removed from a scrapbook affecting five words, with some thinning in blank area on second page, still presentable and good. Sadly, Mitchell was the victim of a traffic accident herself, killed while crossing a busy Atlanta street. $700-800
