Lot 1696
1696. MAGGIE MITCHELL (1832 - 1918) American stage actress who excelled in comedic roles, notably as Fanchon in Fanchon the Cricket. Fine content A.L.S. "Maggie Mitchell Paddock" 3pp. 8vo., New York, Oct.. 15, 1898, to her friend Olive, in part: "...We bought Hollingshead's version of 'La Cigale'...I was not particularly pleased with the piece as its plot is too suggestive of 'Mignon' besides it is not exactly my style...I am not enthusiastic over it. I hear Lotta was quite successful with it in Philadelphia. You are mistaken. My engagement is before Lotta's. I commenced here last night, and before an innumerable audience. 'Fanchon' was the bill, and from present appearances think we will play it the entire engagement...I hope you are serious about the new piece you have for me. You know my peculiar style and can suit me...". A slight fold split, otherwise very good. $100-150
