Description:

Especially rare F.B.I. poster seeking information on the whereabouts of three "Freedom Riders", Andrew Goodman, James Earl Chaney, and Michael Henry Schwerner. The 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" poster is addressed to the Postmaster of Knoxville, Tn. and was received and docketed on June 30, 1964 - one day after its date of issuance. The poster is headed: "MISSING CALL FBI" and bears photos of the three murdered civil rights workers. Text above their images reads: "THE FBI IS SEEKING INFORMATION CONCERNING THE DISAPPEARANCE AT PHILADELPHIA, MISSISSIPPI, OF THESE THREE INDIVIDUALS ON JUNE 21, 1964. EXTENSIVE INVESTIGATION IS BEING CONDUCTED TO LOCATE GOODMAN, CHANEY AND SCHWERNER..." At bottom, the three young men are physically described beneath their respective photos, and the FBI requests any information be sent to the FBI or J. Edgar Hoover himself. Hoover's facsimile signature appears at bottom. File holes at top, some surface soiling, still very good. Set into a fine oak frame and glassed on both sides. The "Mississippi Burning" murders concerned these three men who had traveled from Meridian, Mississippi to the community of Longdale to talk with congregation members at a church that had been burned. The trio was thereafter arrested following a traffic stop outside Philadelphia, Mississippi for speeding, escorted to the local jail and held for a number of hours. As the three left town in their car, they were followed by law enforcement and others. Before leaving Neshoba County their car was pulled over and all three were abducted, driven to another location, shot at close range, and buried in an earthen dam. The three men's bodies were discovered two months later thanks to a tip-off. During the investigation it emerged that members of the local Ku Klux Klan, the Neshoba County Sheriff's Office and the Philadelphia, Mississippi Police Department were involved in the incident.
