Description:

MINSTREL SHOW POSTER
Large broadside poster, 19 3/4" x 29", advertising a "Minstrel Show and Ball" to be held at the Greenville, New Hampshire town hall, likely prior to the Civil War, although the year is not listed. The performance is to be for the benefit of the city's Men's Club, and lists the name of the interlocutor, S.W. Richardson, who would act as a host for the performance, as well as the four "endmen", who would play the parts of the black stereotype characters "Tambo" and "Bones". The broadside was printed by H.M. Cheney of Greenville. The main draw of the minstrel show format, in which an all-white cast adopted blackface to portray African-American stereotypes, was its idealized depiction of slavery on Southern plantations, and its use of stereotypical black characters to present social satire. The popularity of the form waned with the abolition of slavery and the Civil War, and it is especially rare to find material advertising minstrelry in such deep-Northern states as New Hampshire. The poster is affixed to a paperboard backing, and shows chipping at the edges, pin holes at the top edge, a 6" vertical tear from the top edge, and some paper loss affecting the word "show" in the title, else very good.
