Description:

MILLEDGE L. BONHAM
(1813 - 1890) Confederate brigadier general who commanded troops on Morris Island, at the beginning of the war, and a brigade at First Bull Run. In January, 1863 he resigned to become governor of South Carolina, after which he was reappointed to brigadier general and led a cavalry brigade in the Carolinas. War-date signed endorsement next to an A.E.S. (with initials) of South Carolina Gov. FRANCIS W. PICKENS, both penned on the verso of an A.L.S. of Col. E. B. C. Cash, 1p. legal folio, "Camp Marion", Sept. 30, 1861 in which Cash asks for the return of muskets and rifles surrendered by men sidelined by sickness. He notes that many of these men had returned to service, and new recruits had also swelled the ranks, yet no arms were available for distribution. He closes: "...A hundred soldiers without arms are an annoying circumstance to the Commander of a Regiment...[I] invoke your aid for my relief...". On verso, Bonham forwards the request to Gov. Pickens: "...Under an order from General Beauregard, arms of the sick were sent back to Manassas...till the men should recover & some two hundred of Cash's were then disposed of. That officer has given to other troops these arms, and there are no arms to replace them...". Next to Bonham's endorsement, Pickens notes: "...I deeply regret not having the arms to send...I wish those men were needed to defend our own coast...I should be deeply gratified to send the arms if I had them...". Light toning at top of Cash's letter, else very good.
