Description:

MILLEDGE BONHAM
(1813 - 1890) Confederate brigadier general who commanded troops on Morris Island at the beginning of the war, and a brigade at First Bull Run. In January, 1863 he resigned to become governor of South Carolina, after which he was reappointed to brigadier general and led a cavalry brigade in the Carolinas. Rare and good content war-date L.S. 1p. 4to. on Executive Department letterhead, Columbia, Nov. 23, 1864 to Confederate Secretary of War James Seddon, requesting the custody of a cavalryman accused of murder: "Enclosed I send you a copy of the proceedings of a Coroner's Inquest held in Darlington District in this State, by which it appears that one Daniel McDonald is charged with the murder of William Waters. I learn... that McDonald is not in Captain Whitner's Company 4th regiment S. C. Cavalry. I therefore request that said Daniel McDonald may be delivered to myself as the Executive of the State...in order that he may be brought to legal trial...". Very good.
