Description:

ROBERT H. LAESSIG (1910-2013) American combat artist whose work is displayed at the Pentagon and also appeared on a Newsweek cover, twenty Plain Dealer Sunday magazine covers, President Lyndon Johnson's holiday cards, and in four museum collections. During World War II, the military discovered his German ties and held him for months in a detention camp in Texas. He ended up in New Caledonia with the 13th Air Force and drew there in his spare time. Laessig created some 95 paintings which survive at the Pentagon and in a book, and he was awarded a bronze star. Postwar, he was admitted to the National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society. Offered here are two original watercolor paintings by Laessig, each 12" x 8 1/2" on heavy cotton rag paper, ca. 1944. Included is his "P-38 REPAIR AT SANSAPOR", signed at full at lower-right, along with another watercolor of the same dimensions on identical rag stock: "JUNGLE STAGE", unsigned but undoubtedly also by Laessig. Both originate from a suite of Laessig's work and are in fine condition. This painting apparently appeared in the published collection: "From Fiji through the Philippines With the Thirteenth Air Force", by Lt. Col. Benjamin E. Lippincott, Historian, Thirteenth Air Force, (1948) from whose estate this painting likely emanated. It should be noted that the verso of the painting bears a Dept. of the Air Force accession number which would have pre-dated the publication and the painting's deaccession. The verso also bears a notation as to the page upon which the painting would appear. Excellent pieces of period art.
