'MILES X.2 TRANSPORT AEROPLANE' PRESENTATION PLANS
A fascinating collection of presentation plans and specifications for the 'Miles X.2 Transport Aeroplane', an aircraft proposed to the British Air Ministry by England's Miles Aircraft, founded in 1943 and which produced dozens of generally technically advanced aircraft until 1957. The data included is presented in a 16 x 12.5 in. album with gilt title, and it is probably the second of two produced in a tiny limited series. The X.2 design was first publicly unveiled in 'Flight' in 1938, from work begun in 1936. The aircraft was a projected 300 mph 38-seat transport of about 48,000 lbs. loaded with a 1,000-mile range, and it did not use a lifting body fuselage. The initial design was powered by four unspecified 900 hp air-cooled Rolls-Royce piston engines. The wingspan was 99 ft., gross weight 61,000 lbs. The book contains extensive data and sectional drawings. They include specifications on engine and flight performance; instrumentation; climbing, cruising, and maximum speeds under various loads; climb performance; aerodynamic description; weight analysis, production program; structure, etc. Two of these summaries are initialed in indelible pencil by FREDERICK G. MILES (1903–1976), British aircraft designer and manufacturer, a founder of Miles Aircraft who was also the first manufacturer of the ballpoint pen. There are also many wonderful sectional views of the aircraft, including side and front views; frames; passenger seats (including the lounge) in various configurations; the cockpit; tank capacities; wing and fuselage cross sections; and factory layout. A very complete presentation, in excellent condition.
