Description:

(1833 – 1869) Union Army major. He served as lead engineer throughout the war for the Defenses of Washington, Army of the Potomac's III Corps, Department of Ohio, Army of the Tennessee, Defenses of Cincinnati, and the Federal Department of the Gulf. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Fort Lyon, June 3, 1861, to future brevet General WILLIAM HENRY CHRISTIAN (1825-1887) complaining about the conduct of his men. In part: ‘...The report has been made to me...by my overseer that the privates of your command are committing theft upon the U. States property in this fort. It is only after several repetitions that I have been forced to believe it...that the men who were sent to guard the property of the United States, should steal and destroy it...I am informed reliably that these are now in possession of your men, axes, shovels, picks, wheelbarrows, etc. pilfered from the fort. It appears your guards...set the example of theft themselves...Should it prove that these thefts cannot be stopped, and that your command is incapable of protecting the Government property, I shall not hesitate to report facts to proper authorities as it is my duty to do...if you think necessary, I will detail men from among my laborers to watch your soldiers...' Accompanied by original holograph envelope, marked ‘official business'. Very good.
