Description:

Vivid war-date A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Newport News, June 12, 1862, from Eldridge Franklin of the 5th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Company "C", to his father. Franklin elaborates on his recent wounding at the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31. In part: "...My wound is doing remarkably well & I think in 2 weeks I shall be able to be about some with the aid of crutches...The surgeon says my wound entitles me to my discharge but I can remain in the service if I choose as my wound is not so serious as to disable me for life... In this ward there were placed 40 wounded men 6 have been sent away today, one has died and 2 more are not expected to live... Our Regt. had been engaged but a short time when I was wounded. I was taken off by one of the 3rd Mich. & a New York boy. Not relishing the idea of falling into the hands of the enemy I managed to get full 40 rods from where I was wounded before I got any assistance. I was then about exhausted & could have went but a short distance farther. Our Brigade drove the enemy from the ground which Couch's Division had lost & they kept this ground till their ammunition was expended when being also flanked on the right they fell back as they were ordered about 80 rods & remained here till they were relieved by fresh troops about dark. Our Regt. faught well & I think their loss must be heavy...[all sic]" Franklin signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with transmittal envelope present. Very good.
